Search the catalog. If an item is available as an eBook, you can get a copy by clicking "Download This eBook." You may need to login to complete the download.

In some cases, you may only be able to download a couple of chapters, not the entire book. Or, you may only be able to view the book online and not download it at all. It depends on the company that licenses the book to the library.

If you are not a member of the campus community

While we would like to make eBooks available to everyone, our licensing agreements do not allow it. Some eBooks may be viewable only when you are physically in the library, but in most cases, off-campus access is not available.

Finding Materials in the Library

Circulating literature books are shelved by Library of Congress call number PR on the 5th floor, for English literature PS on the 4th floor for American literature. VHSes are also on the 4th floor, and shelved by accession number instead of call no. (example: 356277).  DVDs and cds are on the first floor by the Circulation Desk. New books spend some initial time on a display on the first floor.

Catalog Search Tips

  • If you're searching for criticism on an author, be sure to search under Subject -- a useful subject heading to choose in the results  is the writer's name and criticism and interpretation.  This will bring up subject headings like: Joyce James 1882 1941 Criticism And Interpretation  You'll see the number of books available under each heading.
  • To virtually browse the shelves, do a browse search on Library of Congress Call #
  • The catalog is fiercely Anglocentric, and tildes ~ and accents ' confuse it. This is generally true for most databases.
  • Stop words like "a" "an" "of"  "y" "de" are unnecessary and can limit your search results.
  • Use wild cards, for example, irish lit* as a keyword or subject search brings all variants.

The Dictionary of Literary Biography (DLB) is a large series that looks at specific genres, national writing/writers, and literary movements.  Searching the library catalog using "dictionary of literary biography and amer* nove*" will retrieve at least 6 different volumes. These are shelved on the 4th floor and available for check out. A sample below:
